SEASON'S GREETINGS
We hope that you had a Merry Christmas! We plan to mail our Christmas/New Year's cards soon...everybody needs a card for President's Day, right?

During our Christmas vacation, my grandmother, mother, and I teamed up to make a gingerbread house.

A tense debate over our group "vision" for the house design

The gingerbread shack

After much "discussion," we decided to try again with a graham cracker house. I highly recommend this method - it is much easier and you get to the fun part more quickly.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT
I love a good deal. Now, I know you are thinking, who doesn't love a good deal? ...but I am really obsessed. I remember all of my big coups ($49 for a dining room table and hutch from a JCPenney display furniture sale), and I cannot pass buy a clearance table without looking. Most of these items are lucky finds. However, there is one place to find a deal that is always consistent: www.Priceline.com.

A lot of people are nervous about trying Priceline, or they are simply confused about how it works. First, it is a lot easier than it sounds. I have found it to be best when booking hotel rooms only or full vacation packages.

Past deals:
  • $25 for a room at the Radisson across from Universal Studios in Orlando, July 2001 (now a Doubletree)
  • $40 for a room at the Hyatt in Lexington, Kentucky; December 2004
  • $689.61 per person to go to Dublin, Ireland in January 2006, included round trip air, trip insurance, taxes and fees, 3 nights at a 3 star hotel in downtown Dublin, and 3 1/2 days in Dublin.
  • $40 for a room at the Sheraton Suites in Houston, Texas; multiple times 2006

Okay, so these are good deals, right? And these are not rare. I use Priceline every weekend I go to school.

So now you may be wondering what the catch is. The only items that some may consider a catch are the following: 1) Priceline charges a small fee for each room booked (under $10), 2) Like any other hotel room, taxes are added to the price, and 3) Once you have booked a room, you cannot cancel your reservation and your credit card is charged immediately.

I suggest trying it for a hotel first.

Go to www.Priceline.com. Select the hotel tab. Click on the Deeper Discounts image. Enter your destination, check in date, check out date, and number of rooms. Once you enter that information, you will be directed to a page that lets you choose the location of where you would like to stay and the star level of the hotel. Always be choosy when first selecting. If your initial bid is not selected, you will have to change another location and/or star level...so pick your best case scenario the first time around. For instance, if you entered New Orleans for a check in date of May 18, 2007, you would have the location options of

  • Downtown
  • French Quarter
  • Garden District
  • Metairie-Harahan
  • New Orleans Airport
  • New Orleans East
  • New Orleans West Bank

When choosing a location, remember that downtown or touristy areas typically do not include valet or other parking services. This will be in addition to your hotel rate.

For star levels in our example, you have the following options:

  • 4 star deluxe
  • Boutique
  • 3 star upscale
  • 2 1/2 star moderate-plus
  • 2 star moderate
  • 1 star economy

Based on past experience, only pick a 3 star and up. Sometimes, in smaller communities, 2 1/2 is a good option. I have found the least amount of variation amongst 3 stars. The only caveat to a three star is that you will not have a free, continental breakfast.

Once you have made your selections, name your price. Ahh...the tough part for most people. Go with what you would be happy with. Once you have entered your price, you will be asked to review your selections. Read all of the information carefully, click Next, enter your credit card information, and select Buy My Hotel Room Now. If your bid is accepted, your card will be charged.

If your bid was not accepted, Priceline will ask you to try again.

Priceline is not for everyone and it will take a little practice before you will feel totally comfortable with it. However, if you try it, you may very well be pleasantly surprised.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS Silly String
Silly string can save lives.

Give 2 the Troops

Let's Say Thanks (repost)
I don't know if you have heard about the following, but I found it inspring:
If you go to the web site you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services. It is FREE and it only takes a second. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? I sent mine, now you can send one too!

This is an email that has been sent around, but it is true. I really did just send mine now, and it will only take you a few seconds. The designs are drawn by children. If you have kids, it may be a fun project to have them draw a picture to submit.

DO NOT WATCH RUNNING WITH SCISSORS
Running with Scissors is an awful movie. The trailers play it up like a funny movie; it is not a funny movie. It is one of those movies you go to and keep thinking, now, it will pick up...it will get funny now...um...any time now....yep...I know he is going to do this and everything will be okay....hmmm...he didn't do that...
The movie stunk. We sat there speechless after it finished. We would have watched another movie to clear our heads, but it was the last movie of the evening. Once again, it was bad. It wasn't thought provoking like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, or Elizabethtown. We like off beat movies, but Running with Scissors is terrible.

This has been a public service announcement of Billy and Christy. It has not been a test. The events portrayed do represent actual people and places. All events portrayed are non-fictional.
FYI, The Prestige is a good movie, if you like mystery and suspense.

SIX YEARS
Six years ago this Saturday, Billy and I exchanged vows at Creekwood Gardens in North Louisiana. It was a beautiful autumn day, and our family and friends surrounded us. Thank you for your continued support in the years since.

OKAY, WE KNOW YOU ARE THERE
watching and waiting. Did they post anything new? I am sooo sick of the blog from two weeks ago. We hear you. We haven't forgotten; we've just been busy moving into our new home. So, until we have the time to blog again, take some time to turn off the computer, go outside and feel the autumn breeze, and pop in the new Jimmy Buffett cd (released today), Take the Weather with You. Don't worry, we'll be back before you know it.

WE HAVE FOUND US A HOME
...in more ways than one. Friday, we closed on our first house (pictured in a previous blog), and Sunday, we finally joined a church - Lake Highlands Baptist Church. The church is conveniently located walking distance from our home. It goes to show that God really does have things figured out way better than we could ever do it ourselves. So, all this to say, that after a year of living like nomads/gypsies/leprechauns (hey- those rainbows move), we have found a home - until God decides to move us, which, if he does, it will be fine. He has shown that to us time and time again this year.

Hanging
A cowboy walks into a bar. He notices it is strangely empty, so he asks the bartender Where's everybody?
Bartender: They went to the hanging.
Cowboy: A hanging? Who are they hanging?
Bartender: Brown Paper Pete
Cowboy: Why's he called Brown Paper Pete?
Bartender: Well, he wears a brown paper bag for a hat, brown paper bags for his shoes, and his shirt, pants, and belt are all made out of brown paper bags.
Cowboy: Well, that's strange...hmmm.....What exactly are they hanging this Brown Paper Pete for?

Conversion
Boudreaux the Baptist, a Cajun highlander from Rapides Parish in central Louisiana, was an older, single gentleman, who was born and raised a Baptist, living in South Louisiana. Each Friday night after work, he would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a venison steak. Now, all of Boudreaux's neighbors were Catholic, and since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on Fridays. The delicious aroma from the grilled venison steaks was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest.
The priest came to visit Boudreaux, and suggested that Boudreaux convert to Catholicism. After several classes and much study, Boudreaux attended Mass, and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, "You were born a Baptist and raised a Baptist, but now you are Catholic."
Boudreaux's neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled venison filled the neighborhood. The priest was called immediately by the neighbors and, as he rushed into Boudreaux's yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped in amazement and watched. There stood Boudreaux, clutching a small bottle of water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat, and chanted: "You wuz born a deer, and you wuz raised a deer, but now you a catfish."

ONE YEAR
Rhyme time:
Hurricane,
Mayor insane.
Mass evacuation,
Unbelievable devastion.
Water got high,
Washed a way of life by.
Life seemed strange,
It was full of change.
People pitched in,
Hearts started to mend.
With God we overcame strife,
Moved on with life.
Those lost we pay respect,
As on this anniversary we reflect.
Thank you all for your aid,
So great a kindness cannot be repaid.

WHEW! LAST WEEK WAS BUSY

We signed a contract on a house Monday:

It is in the Old Lake Highlands area of Dallas, near White Rock Lake.

Billy turned 28 Wednesday:

We celebrated at my parent's house in Homer. You know any party that has a tub of Blue Bell ice cream is bound to be good.

I got a job Friday as Marketing Manager for Texas Medical & Surgical Associates:

What did you expect? A business suit? I was feeding cake to the pugs.

Lucy turned 5 Saturday:

Truly, we have no shame. That is a Hawaiian lei AND a princess party hat.

Hope that all is well with you,

THE CONTINUING ADVENTURES OF MR SLICK & MISS LUCY
Slick's journal entry (Tenth day of the Eighth month of theYear of our Lord 2006):
My exploration took a bit of a turn last week - I was taken captive by the tribe locally known as CityVet. Luckily, no harm was done to me. They appeared to be a friendly people. They even gave me a paper necklace - probably a peace offering in the tribal culture. However, the accommodations were quite primative. I would have been interested to see more of their rituals, but Tuesday morn I was transported back the land I am starting to call my home...

Lucy's journal entry (Stardate 8/10/06):
Much has happened since I last reported. I was seized last week. I think it was by the inhabitants of the planet VetRx. I expected it would happen sometime; many have wanted to study my genius brain and my superb physique. It was just a matter of time. I am glad to report that the experimentation did not seem to affect my physical preparation for the upcoming intergalatic battle with the new intruder.
Since my return, I have been strenuously training. Who knows where the battle will take place? I am preparing for all possibilities, so that I will be ready whether it be by land or by sea.
Here, I am suiting up.
Some say that my muzzle is writing checks my body can't cash, but we will see. Once I am done, my enemy will look like these duckies.

mwahahahaha, muhuhahaha, mwahahaha.....

THE HALLS GO TO WASHINGTON
Last week, Billy and I had the pleasure of going to the D.C. area to see our friend Julie get married. The ceremony was beautiful. It was set at Shenanadoah National Park. The scenery and weather were enough to make me want to move to Virginia. Have you ever been to an outdoor wedding in August where the high was 75 degrees? Below is a video of Julie and Mike enjoying their wedding cake.
While we were there, we decided to take a few days to see the sites and visit our hometown friend, Meredith. Since Meredith works for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, she was able to give us a special tour of the Capitol.
Also, Sunday, we were able to see even more of the capitol city with Stephanie and James Thomas, who had also come in for the wedding.
If you have never been to our Capitol, I strongly urge you to go. The only thing you will regret about your trip is not having more time to see it all.

MR. SLICK & MISS LUCY
(Think the The Adventures of Milo & Otis, with a paranoid twist)

Slick's journal entry (First day of the Eighth month of theYear of our Lord 2006):
Today's schedule, on the new frontier, has been full. It began with the same strange beeping noise as in the days before. I'm not sure what it is, but it makes the natives restless. First, they grunt, then they strike out at a small box - that seems to quiet the noise, but within minutes it is back. Eventually, the species indigenous to this new land begin to rouse. In recent days, I have found, that for me, the noise signals a day of further exploration. So far, the task has not been too arduous. I have found the region plentiful- butts to sniff, many crevices to nap, new spots to claim for my kingdom in the courtyards, - and a small cabinet containing many silver cans of delectable new delights. I may have found the fountain of youth....
Slick with the toy frog his Aunt Blair sent him

Lucy's journal entry (Stardate 8/1/06):
Inconceivable! Another has invaded MY universe. He is subtle in his ways...too subtle, but I am on to him. I know his intentions. Curse my infirmity! If I were but a well pug, with a fully healed knee, he would know my wrath. As for now, I will have to lay in wait for the day when I can rectify this atrocity...
Correction, the toy frog MY Aunt Blair sent ME

TWO ANNOUNCEMENTS
  1. We have an official website now: www.billyandchristy.com
  2. Our family is growing!
Website
Although our new site currently redirects you to our blog, we expect the website to have the most updated information as we develop it in the future.
Growing Family
I know many of you out there are doing the math right now...Billy and Christy have been married almost 6 years, Christy is almost through with her Masters, they must finally be having a baby...
Nope. We adopted Slick yesterday. No this is not one of those new fangled celebrity baby names like Apple or Pilot. This is the name that came with our dog. That's right, a new dog.
Slick is a 15 year old male pug. We read about him on www.DFWpugs.com. His story really touched our hearts. After 15 years in the same home, his owner decided he was too old, and she did not want him any more. She didn't want to have to deal with him when he got sick. You would think, after 15 years in a home, Slick would come with some accessories. Nope. When his foster mom picked him up, she found him in the back of a truck in a choke collar. She told the owner she could keep the choke collar.
We added Slick to our home yesterday, and he has been winning friends and influencing people since. Yes, he is 105 years old in dog years (if you use the old 7 years for every human year), but Slick is overflowing with love. We are very proud to have him napping on our floor.
Slick isn't picky when it comes to a napping location.
Slick modeling his new red harness. That's right, our little boy is a Republican.
The nice things about adopting an older dog is that we are past the puppy years and he is already housebroken.
Hope all is well with you and yours,
~Christy

ADOPTION
Open your heart to love. Share your home, share your blessings, share your doggy kibble...doggy kibble? That's right, I'm talking about pet adoption. Too many good pets go unloved. Why? People get a pet without researching if that breed or pet will fit into their lifestyle. Owners pass away. Many reasons, some not as nice as those listed. It is understandable if you want a purebred - some traits are going to be more suitable to your lifestyle. Pugs don't need a lot of exercise/we don't have a yard. Pugs shed a lot/we're not Martha Stewarts around here. Pugs are not heat tolerant/we are okay with a full time inside dog. What many people do not know is that there are many purebred rescues available, and, no, not all are old/disabled/etc. A lot of puppies are available. Examples of purebred rescues in North Texas:

...and the list goes on and on. Visit www.petfinder.com to see more.

And for the kitty lovers:

Add some love to your life today. ~Christy

FOOD FIND
Cheap, quick, classy, good service, good food, easy parking - too good to be true? Luckily, no. This describes Monica's Aca y Alla in the Deep Ellum part of Dallas. We first saw it listed on Rachel Rey's $40/day show in Dallas. It is kind of modern Mexican food - read: not covered in heavy sauce and it has flavors other than cheese detectable. Don't get me wrong, I love a good enchilada in an artery clogging sour cream sauce. However, Monica's is a real find. What makes it so special to me is half price night. That's right, HALF PRICE. You may be thinking, "What is this half price of?" Well, most entrees are around the $10 mark. This means eating at Monica's on half price night is cheaper than a fast food combo meal. Half price night is Tuesday. Thursday night, enchilada entrees are $4.50 - not too shabby. This is definitely a place to try if you live near by. Parking is best done by using the many meter spots - 1 hour for $0.50. Visit www.monicas.com. for more info and a menu listing.
Disclaimer: This is not a paid advertisement for Monica's. However, if you would like to offer us money, that's fine too (make checks payable to Billy and Christy Hall, cash preferred). BillyandChristy are in no way affiliated with Monica's, nor do we know Monica. Any resemblence to actual people and places in this blog are purely coincidental. May contain nuts. Do not use your laptop in the bathtub, and, by all means, DO NOT REMOVE THE TAG under penalty of federal law.

GEOCACHING
For those of you who don't know, geocaching is a hobby. It is kind of like an international scavenger hunt. Geocachers all over the world hide small caches in public areas. See www.geocaching.com for a much better explanation. If you like to be outdoors, it is a great way to explore an area, get some exercise, and have some good, clean fun. Geocaching is also family friendly. It is free to join and free to explore. Typically, those who are really into it buy a GPS, but this is not necessary. We found our first geocache in Houston without one, and it is probably the most difficult one we have discovered.
Visit http://www.geocaching.com/about/ for more info about how to get started. More than likely, there are many caches located near you, and you can probably find one today. There is a cache located at Lake Claiborne on a hiking trail. I haven't been, but I understand that it has a travel bug (http://www.geocaching.com/track/faq.aspx) in it. The travel bug is a Marge Simpson key chain. It's goal is to visit all of the "Homers" in the U.S. Below is a picture of a travel bug we found in Key West. For this bug, you are supposed to take and post a picture of where it is found and where it is relocated to.
Our geocache login is billyandchristy (no surprise, right?). Let us know if you have questions or if you decide to try it. Even though we are not always successful, we have a lot of fun.

WHITE WASHED
During my period of unemployment, I have discovered the joys of the complex pool closest to us. I especially love reading a good book by the pool in the early afternoon, when the pool is least crowded. HOWEVER, I do feel a major source of discomfort when others come to the pool. This is because I stand out at a pool in the early afternoon, or more accurately, I blind others with my brightness. Regardless of my efforts with multiple bottles of sunless tan a year, my Powder-esqness is not diminished in the slightest (Thanks to the movie of the same name, Powder was my high-school nickname). I know I shouldn't be so self concious. I would love to think others don't notice, but years of taunting by the tannable have taught me otherwise. Plus, it doesn't help that our complex is full of young singles, and the pool is the main meat market in which to meet and greet.
Through the years, the kind hearted and helpful have suggested the tanning salon with many other vices. But, the fact remains, the only color I change to is red, if I don't apply an inch or two of SPF 100. After the red receeds, I am not left with a golden glow, but rather a pasty white, with a nice speckling of many freckles. Sure, back in the day (read 1800s or dark ages) my skin would have been something to admire - Oh, look at Christy's alabaster brillance - how she outshines the rest of us. Okay, I couldn't resist that last bit. Alas, such days are gone, but then again, if I lived back then, I wouldn't have a blog to complain to.
~Christy (your pasty blogger friend)

TOUCHING BASE
Since I last blogged, I have been focused on my job search, which seems to being going well relative to my effort. I interviewed for one today, and I am really excited about it. At the same time, I know God will handle whether or not I am meant to work there. If I did not get the position, He has something way better planned for me. It is good to know that we are in good hands.

Last week, we had a little surprise, Lucy required knee surgery. We found out Monday, consulted with the surgeon Thursday afternoon, and took her to surgery Friday. After 4-5 months of healing, she will have the other knee operated. Apparently, she suffers from a disconformity common in dogs in her size. Also, her bowed legs (similar to a bulldog's stance) aggravated the situation. It's terrible, but it is hard not to laugh at her. She is almost half-way shaved, and they placed one of those Elizabethan collars on her.

Other than that, we are still trying to find a church home, and we continue to explore the city. One of our current goals is to find the best Mexican food restaurant. So far, we recommend Monica's Aca y Alla. Tuesday, most menu items are half price, and, since prices are around $8.95 for an entree to begin with, it is a steal. Also, Thursdays, enchilada plates are $3.99. With these prices, you might expect a dive, but it is really nice on the inside.

Hope all is well! ~Christy

UP AMID THE PINE TREES...
Stands Homer High, fair are her portals, fairer still her name...
If you did not go to Homer HS, you are probably thinking "What?!, people said bloggers post strange stuff." For those of you who did attend those hallowed halls built in 1926, you probably don't remember the rest of the words either. Homer, LA was a pretty nice place to grow up. Sure, there are not any malls, movie theaters, etc. BUT It was relatively safe and friendly and you felt a sense of history.
One of the unique reminders of that history is the collection of senior class pictures adorning the Homer HS walls. The first class (in the current building) graduated in 1927. Walking down those halls always gave me a sense of belonging, a sense of the continuity of life. I loved seeing the pictures of my grandparents and parents, amongst numerous other relatives. I'm sure that I am not the only one who felt that way. Of course, by the time you reach the 1980's, the pictures are not so distinguished. Gone are the sepia tones and sensible fashions. Instead, you have color pictures with feather boas - nothing says timeless like a feather boa, right? This aside, the hallway is a nice representation of the history of a small community. Probably the nicest reminder of Homer's history is the courthouse on the square. One of the 4 remaining antebellum courthouses in the State of Louisiana, this courthouse was used as a civil war hospital. It is the only one of the four still in use today.
Arguably, not everyone feels the same about Homer. However, I am proud to call it my hometown, regardless of where I move.

WEIGHING IN...
Billy and I are currently in the process of downsizing, ourselves that is. We have this pesky "Katrina" weight. Truth be told, the weight began before last August, but frequently eating out due to travel and moving escalated the situation. When we started our efforts, we both had about 25lbs to shed. We now have about 20 each. After 8 weeks of trying, that doesn't seem like much progress.
What has worked for you or others you know?

CATCH-UP
For catch up's sake, if we haven't been in touch in the past few months: Billy and I currently live in Dallas. I like to use the term currently, because we have led a nomadic life since Hurricane Katrina: 3 weeks for me in North Louisiana (evacuation), 3 months for Billy (evacuation & job), 8 months and two apartments for me in Houston (job & school), 5 months and one apartment for Billy (job) - with trips interspersed to Shreveport, New Orleans, Dallas, San Antonio, Key West, Ireland, and Mexico....but, we are happy to announce that we finally live in the same place, the Big D. We moved to Dallas with Billy's job. Having left my job with our move from Houston to Dallas, I am focusing on completing my MBA and finding a job in DFW.

Our apartment home of four years in New Orleans post-Katrina:

We actually came out really well. However, many of our friends and coworkers did not. I know everyone gets tired of hearing it, but a lot of help is still needed for the Gulf Coast.
Please pray for those affected by the hurricanes.

We would love to hear from you and find out what you are up to. Email us at billyandchristy@yahoo.com. Also, we are looking for a church home in the DFW area; please send us any suggestions.
