UP AMID THE PINE TREES...
Stands Homer High, fair are her portals, fairer still her name...
If you did not go to Homer HS, you are probably thinking "What?!, people said bloggers post strange stuff." For those of you who did attend those hallowed halls built in 1926, you probably don't remember the rest of the words either. Homer, LA was a pretty nice place to grow up. Sure, there are not any malls, movie theaters, etc. BUT It was relatively safe and friendly and you felt a sense of history.
One of the unique reminders of that history is the collection of senior class pictures adorning the Homer HS walls. The first class (in the current building) graduated in 1927. Walking down those halls always gave me a sense of belonging, a sense of the continuity of life. I loved seeing the pictures of my grandparents and parents, amongst numerous other relatives. I'm sure that I am not the only one who felt that way. Of course, by the time you reach the 1980's, the pictures are not so distinguished. Gone are the sepia tones and sensible fashions. Instead, you have color pictures with feather boas - nothing says timeless like a feather boa, right? This aside, the hallway is a nice representation of the history of a small community. Probably the nicest reminder of Homer's history is the courthouse on the square. One of the 4 remaining antebellum courthouses in the State of Louisiana, this courthouse was used as a civil war hospital. It is the only one of the four still in use today.
Arguably, not everyone feels the same about Homer. However, I am proud to call it my hometown, regardless of where I move.

I'm bored and I like to show off so here you go: Up amid the pine trees, stands Homer High. Fair are her portals, fairer still her name. (bumda bumda bumda) Royal are her colors, loyal are we. Our faith, our love, now we pledge to thee. I will follow that up with: Go Pels Go, go pels go (rhoo rhoo rhoo). Who's the true homer alum up in here? : D

I am so proud. (especially of you Winter). For added trivia did you know that my mother was in the first class to graduate from there and that we now have 3 generations who have had the honor. I am bummed out though that they are lax in getting the later years of pictures hung. I think it stops with ya'lls class.
